Asthma is a leading
cause of morbidity in children. It's also a major concern for a lot
of Kings County children and
their parents. This website is designed to provide educational materials,
articles, and insight to managing and living an active life with asthma.
Many asthmatic children aren't
receiving the appropriate medications. A national survey has shown
that health care providers tend to underestimate the severity of
asthma. 60% of all children with persistent asthma were thought
by their providers to have intermittent asthma and only about half
of the children diagnosed with persistent asthma were prescribed
maintenance treatment. One of the national goals in the treatment
of asthma is to reduce hospitalizations. For the period 1998-2000
Kings County had a hospitalization rate exceeded by only a couple
counties.
With that said the KCAC hopes that
all those managing asthma in their lives will find this site useful.
The mission of the Kings County Asthma Coalition
is to provide asthma education to every community in Kings County
to improve the quality of life for our asthma sufferers and to raise
awareness about the chronic illness that affects so many in our valley.
